Jess was born in Spain and moved to the States when she was young. Her father and that side of the family still live in Rota, Andalucía, so this is not a country she simply visits. It is part of the family geography.

Jess’s Spain begins in Rota, on the Atlantic edge of Cádiz province. This is family territory: salt air, long evenings, fried fish, and a coastline that feels lived in rather than staged. Andalucía is the region she knows most intimately, including the practical details that separate a graceful route from a hot, overstuffed march between monuments.
Sevilla is the grand gesture. Orange trees, tiled courtyards, late lunches, flamenco with actual pulse, and architecture that makes even a walk to dinner feel cinematic. It deserves time beyond the headline sights. The city is better when the schedule loosens enough for a shaded table, an unplanned turn, and the realization that nobody sensible is rushing supper.
Then go north and let Spain change the subject. Bilbao is cooler, greener, and thrillingly self-possessed. The Guggenheim may get the photographs, but the city’s real argument is how comfortably bold design, industrial history, pintxos, and Basque identity occupy the same frame. Add the coast and northern Spain becomes the plot twist people wish they had planned sooner.
