Jess grew up in Fort Lauderdale and now calls Orlando home. Her Florida is bigger than turnstiles, louder than a postcard, and considerably more interesting than the version beside the interstate.
People tend to arrive in Florida with one of two pictures in their head: the castle or the beach. Both have their moments. Neither tells the whole story. The Florida Jess knows begins in the spaces between them, where the roads narrow, the water changes color, and lunch lasts longer than anyone planned.
Our bias is unapologetically local. Orlando is home turf, which means we know the theme parks can be spectacular and also that sometimes the correct plan is to leave them behind. There are brick streets shaded by old oaks, serious restaurants tucked into ordinary neighborhoods, natural springs close enough for a day trip, and hotels where the pool can be the agenda instead of the recovery plan.
Then there is South Florida, where Jess grew up. Fort Lauderdale teaches you early that water is not scenery; it is infrastructure, personality, and weekend plans. The right stay is not simply “near the beach.” It is the right pocket of the coast for the way you want to spend your days, whether that means boats and restaurants, a quieter stretch of sand, or enough polish to disappear without feeling isolated.
Head west and the mood changes again. The Gulf softens the edges. Sunsets become an actual appointment. Go south and the Overseas Highway turns transportation into the main event. Point inland and Florida gets stranger, greener, and more beautiful: clear springs, cypress, mangroves, manatees, and places that feel a world away from the billboards.
